Voices can’t be banned: freedom of speech for a free Nepal
Our statement on the social media ban in Nepal and the violence that followed.
In recent weeks, Nepal has witnessed an alarming ban on social media platforms, a move that has shaken the foundation of open dialogue and freedom of expression. The government, citing control over misinformation and unrest, has restricted citizens from connecting, sharing and voicing their concerns.
The decision has only deepened the ongoing political crisis, and yesterday the situation escalated tragically. Violent clashes broke out between students and law enforcement, leaving more than 100 students injured. What should have been peaceful calls for dialogue turned into heartbreaking scenes of bloodshed.
We must remember: violence cannot be the answer. The true strength of a nation lies in its ability to listen, to allow its people to speak, and to nurture open conversation without fear.
Freedom of speech is not a privilege. It is a fundamental right.
